"We are going to have to guard against a rise in a crude sort of nationalism, or ethnic identity or tribalism that is built around an us and a them, and I will never apologize for saying that the future of humanity and the future of the world is going to be defined by what we have in common, as opposed to those things that separate us and ultimately lead us into conflict." - Barack Obama

"Because when people are scared, then strange things can happen in politics. We can get a politics that is not about bringing people together but is about us and them and looking for somebody to blame. The country never moves forward when it's based on us and them. It moves forward when it's based on us. Period." - Barack Obama

"By the time I had dropped my friends off, I had begun to see a new map of the world, one that was frightening in its simplicity, suffocating in its implications. We were always playing on the White man's court, I was told, by the White man's rules. If the principal, or the coach, or a teacher wanted to spit in your face, he could, because he had power, and you did not. If he decided not to, if he treated you like a man, or came to your defense, it was because he knew that the words you spoke, the clothes you wore, the books that you read, your ambitions and desires were already his. Whatever he decided to do, it was his decision, not yours, and because of that fundamental power he held over you, because it preceded and would outlast his individual motives and inclinations, any distinctions between good and bad, Whites held negligible meaning. In fact, you couldn't even be sure that everything you had assumed to be an expression of your Black unfettered self - the humor, the song, the behind-the-back pass - had been freely chosen by you. At best, these things were a refuge. At worst, a trap. Following this maddening logic, the only thing you could chose as your own is withdraw into a smaller and smaller coil of rage until being Black meant only the knowledge of your own powerlessness and your own defeat. And the final irony, should you refuse this defeat and lash out at your captors, they would have a name for that, too; a name that could cage you just as good. Like 'paranoid', or 'militant', or 'violent', or 'nigger'." - Barack Obama

"I am a strong supporter of Affirmative Action when properly structured so that it is not just a quota, but it is acknowledging and taking into account some of the hardships and difficulties that communities of color may have experienced, continue to experience, and it also speaks to the value of diversity in all walks of American life." - Barack Obama

"When any efforts to help people in need are attacked as 'un-American', when facts and reason are thrown overboard and only timidity passes for wisdom and we can no longer engage in a civil conversation with each other over the things that truly matter, then at that point we don't merely lose our capacity to solve big challenges, we lose something essential about ourselves." - Barack Obama
