"Socialism works in every country it coexists with private sectors. This includes the majority of the nations on the planet we call our allies. Public Schools are socialism. Public Libraries are socialism. Public utilities are socialism. (You still pay for them, but they are generally heavily subsidized, and have programs for the poor to gain access to critical infrastructure (without having to jury rig their own solutions) like is commonly done in places like India. Public hospitals and pharmacies which exist in every wealthy nation on the planet (except our own) are also socialism. Medicare which pays for medical care for everyone in Canada is Socialism. Medicare exists in part, and is eligible to some here in the US as well. FDR a GOP republican was a Socialist. Look up 2nd Bill of Rights to see what his hope for this country was. Social Security is solvent for at least the next 75 years in a "low cost" assumption. And 20 years at a "high cost" assumption, which means even if we do nothing to it, it will survive you and me, and the next 5 to 18 presidential elections. http://www.ssa.gov/oact/progdata/fundFAQ.html#&a0=7 But, I'm sure you rather keep believing every politician on the KOCH payroll, and the idiots on FOX NEWS. Who are all paid to say SS is bankrupt over and over again until you just believe it. Just in case you're curious, here is a map of every nation on earth that has Universal Healthcare. http://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2012/06/heres-a-map-of-the-countries-that-provide-universal-health-care-americas-still-not-on-it/259153/ On this map, we find that the United States (the richest nation on earth) has a lot more in common with the poorer and more violent nations on earth, than the other wealthy nations. Make of that whatever you will. I think by getting Universal Healthcare into our country, we will alter the mood and conscience of America to be less ruthless. For instance, if we were doing a good job with mental health in this country, a lot less poor people would be shot in the streets (by the cops), and lot less crazy people would be shooting up churches and movie theaters. I care about making public education the best it can be, because I want the people living next to me to be smart. I care about proper access to health-care, because I want the people living next to be disease free. Their collective intelligence, and their health, is something that benefits me. My concern about that, and my willingness to contribute to civil society is socialism. The man who wrote the pledge of allegiance of the United States of America, which is something patriotic republicans say all the time was actually written by a Christian Socialist! Public roads, interstates, and highways, is also socialism. Socialism is all around you, and you've probably benefited from it your whole life, and yet, you hate it so much that you want to deny the generations that came after you the same opportunities and securities currently provided to you by this country. I've been to real shitholes, and while I was in those places, it really opened my eyes. Banana republics loosely governed (and heavily influenced by US or other major power capitalists) are ruled by greed and corruption and some of the most cut-throat and reckless capitalism you can imagine. I've seen what that does to communities in South America, and in Africa, and I've seen the wealthy live behind walls and gates where private guards stand-watch, and gas-stations under heavy police guard equipped with machine guns all the time, have you? Because from what I've personally experienced, and what I see in various statistical metrics, the closer a society approaches anarcho-capitalism the more that society resembles a gang-filled police-state where the majority lives in complete squalor, and the rich live in fortresses, and many of the children go unschooled, and some people are in obvious need of surgery due to crippling deformities. And the more a nation looks like that, the more likely that nation begins to tear itself apart in factional conflicts that seeks to reverse the fortunes of those who have nothing left to take, or give! Now, most of America is clearly not that bad off, but that's because the socialists won when FDR got elected, and we don't look like super-polluted China today, because the socialists won again when activists compelled Nixon to create the EPA to prevent greedy capitalists wrecking entire communities with the unsafe dumping of toxic wastes. Now, republicans are running on a platform of undoing all of that stuff. Get rid of anti-trust laws, government oversight, and privatize everything. If you guys get everything you want (a hyper-capitalist state), this nation will no longer resemble the once great nation I grew up in, instead, it will resemble the nations I voluntarily did mission work in." - random Internet user (TIXE RIGHT)
